Become an IBCLC
Whether you want to become a certified lactation consultant or simply deepen your knowledge to better support families — we offer a different path to get there.
"Hands-on education, mentoring, and real-world training — not just an online course."
The gold standard in lactation care
The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant is an allied health professional with the skills, knowledge, and competencies to provide expert breastfeeding support to families. IBCLCs work within a professional code of ethics, clinical competencies, and internationally recognised standards of practice.
The current pathway is long, demanding, and not accessible to everyone. We think that needs to change.
Three things you need. We can help with two of them.
To become an IBCLC you need health sciences education, lactation-specific education, and clinical hours. You do not need to be a healthcare provider to begin this journey — the pathway is open to anyone with a passion for supporting breastfeeding families. Motherhood Matters can support you with the lactation-specific education through our 95 Hour Lactation Education Program, and with the clinical hours and mentoring through our Pathway 3 program. The health sciences subjects need to be completed separately — we can advise on options when you get in touch.
95 Hour Lactation Education Program
Our evidence-based, self-paced program covers all areas of the IBLCE Detailed Content Outline and meets the 95 hours of lactation-specific education required for certification. Open to anyone worldwide — no prior healthcare qualification required.

We want to make a change in how we as healthcare providers are seen, and a change in how we assess, educate, and support those in our care — so that every breastfeeding dyad receives the informed, compassionate, and evidence-based support they deserve.
